Your child can have a free school dinner, there are lots of nice things to choose from. If they bring a pack lunch it needs to be named and in a lunch box. For information about our lunch provision please click here.

Fruit and vegetables are provided through a government scheme and this is made available as a snack every morning so your child does not need to bring a snack with them. A typical selection includes apples, pears, satsumas, bananas, tomatoes or carrots. If you feel that your child might need more than this we are happy for them to bring in a supplementary piece of fruit or vegetable.

Children need to bring a named water bottle into school everyday.

Top Tips

We recommend buying uniform a little on the large side! It makes taking jumpers off and getting changed so much easier for the children and helps them to be more independent.

Practise getting changed ready for PE lessons during the summer.

Name EVERYTHING including pants, socks and shoes.

Send PE kit to school in a drawstring PE bag so that it does not have to be carried to school everyday.

Avoid shoes with laces!

The PTA or Parent Teacher Association for St Nicholas School is referred to as FONS, which is abbreviated from “Friends of St Nicholas School”.

What do I do if my child is too unwell to attend school? 

• Please call school or send an email to explain that your child is unwell. We will need to know your child's name and the nature of their illness, we will need to call you if you simply report they are unwell. 
• Children should not attend school for 48 hours after any episode of sickness or diarrhoea.
• We kindly ask that parents/carers follow the advice of medical professionals and the NHS in relation to any other illnesses.

What happens if my child becomes unwell at school? 

• Please be reassured that we will call you if we are worried about your child. 
• If your child is too unwell for school, we will ask you to collect them. 
• Sometimes we may call you to discuss your child, we may ask for you to help decide whether you would like us to keep them, perhaps providing a dose of Calpol, or whether you would prefer to pick them up.

We like to go outside even though it is sometimes wet and muddy. It would be really useful to have a named waterproof jacket in school every day. On hot days, sun cream and a hat are a good idea.

We do dance, gymnastics and games throughout the year. Named PE kits* need to come to school on a Monday and will be sent home on a Friday for washing. Children should not be wearing jewellery to school. * You do not need to provide P.E. footwear until notified by Reception Staff.

Children will get a library book to share at home and a school reading book when you are ready. They will need a book bag to put these in. They need to bring their named book bag with them to school every day. Top Tip: attach a coloured ribbon or key chain to your child's book bag so they can find it easily in the book bag box (The book bag does not need to be green)

My child has started school but doesn’t tell me what they have been doing all day! How can I find out?

We have an open door policy in Foundation Stage so you are more than welcome to pop in after school for your child to share what they have been spending the day doing. We will update our ClassDojo page with photos of events and activities and are more than happy to chat if you have any queries! You will be sent a link to Class Dojo once you have returned your enrolment forms.

My child has started school and I have noticed they are doing new things, would you like to know?

Yes, we only have the children for a small part of the year and we love to share their achievements at home. We will send home proud clouds for you to fill in so we can celebrate with you when they do things like becoming independent, showing the school values and take part family celebrations or attend clubs. Feel free to also send photos via ClassDojo for us to share and celebrate.

How else will I find out about what is going on at school?

We send all letters and other messages via email to parents so please make sure that we have your email address and notify us if this should change. You can also check the website.
