Becoming The Best We Can Be

Geography

At St Nicholas, we want children to be curious about the world around them — to ask questions, explore places, and think like geographers. We follow the Kapow Primary Geography scheme, which helps children build a broad understanding of how places, people and environments are connected, both locally and globally.

Our lessons encourage children to observe, measure, record and present geographical information in meaningful ways. They learn how geography shapes lives over time and across different scales, and they begin to see how they can make a positive difference to the world around them.

Throughout EYFS and Key Stage 1, children take part in practical, engaging activities both in and beyond the classroom. In the early years, they start by exploring their immediate environment. As they move through KS1, they build on this by learning about the local area, using maps, and recognising physical and human features. By Year 2, they’re comparing life in the UK to places outside Europe and asking thoughtful questions about the world.

Lessons are carefully sequenced to make sure children develop key skills and knowledge in line with the National Curriculum and EYFS guidance. Each unit includes assessment descriptors to help teachers track progress, and key vocabulary is introduced and displayed in classrooms to support understanding.

Geography is captured in whole-class floorbooks. Children enjoy sharing their ideas and discoveries, and they begin to make links between geography and other subjects like history and science. They learn to interpret maps, photographs and data, and to communicate their findings in different ways.

By the time they leave KS1, children at St Nicholas can speak confidently about their geography learning. They understand key physical and human processes, use geographical vocabulary accurately, and show a growing awareness of their role in caring for the planet.
