Becoming The Best We Can Be

PSHE

Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) and Relationships Sex & Health Education (RSHE)

Our teaching of, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education helps children develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to thrive in school and beyond. We use the Kapow scheme, which aligns with the statutory Relationships Sex and Health Education (RSHE) requirements set out by the Department for Education, supports PSHE in the National Curriculum and references the PSHE Association Programme of Study.

From September 2020, all primary schools in England have been required to teach Relationships and Health Education. The government has outlined what children should know by the end of primary school but schools are free to decide how best to deliver this. At St Nicholas, we ensure our approach is age-appropriate, inclusive and sensitive to the needs of our pupils and community. We welcome conversations with parents and carers about how these topics are taught.

In EYFS and KS1, children begin to explore key themes such as friendship, family, emotions, healthy choices and staying safe. These lessons are carefully planned to support children’s wellbeing and help them prepare for the next stage of their education and life beyond school. As children mature, they revisit these themes with greater depth and understanding.

Children are given opportunities to build knowledge, reflect on their feelings, and listen to others’ views in a safe and respectful environment. Teachers use stories, puppets, and ground rules to ensure children feel confident and supported during these lessons.

All statutory content in Relationships and Health Education is compulsory. Parents may only request to withdraw their child from specific sex education content that goes beyond the science curriculum. We encourage families to speak with us if they have any questions or concerns. We are always happy to share more about how we approach these important topics.

Our curriculum will also reflect the updated RSHE guidance issued by the Department for Education in July 2025, which comes into effect from September 2026. We are committed to ensuring our teaching remains current, relevant, and responsive to national expectations.
