Becoming The Best We Can Be

Science

At St Nicholas, we want science to be meaningful, engaging and relevant to our children’s lives. We use Switched on Science to make sure all the content from the Primary Science National Curriculum is fully covered, giving every child their entitlement to a broad and balanced science education.

Units are carefully planned to build on what children have experienced in the EYFS, and to prepare them for what’s to come in Key Stage 2. Each year group explores six topics across the year, with regular opportunities for hands-on investigations, practical enquiry and thoughtful discussion. Children also develop their understanding of seasonal change throughout EYFS and KS1, helping them notice and describe patterns in the world around them.

Scientific enquiry is at the heart of our approach. Children learn to ask questions and explore ideas through five key types of enquiry:

  • Observation over time
  • Fair or comparative testing
  • Identification and classification
  • Research
  • Pattern seeking

Lessons are designed to be purposeful and accessible, with key vocabulary introduced and revisited to help children talk confidently about their learning. Where appropriate, ICT and practical equipment are used to support investigations and deepen understanding.

Science learning is recorded in whole-class floorbooks, where children’s questions, reflections, photos and group thinking are captured. These books celebrate the journey of discovery and give children a shared space to talk about what they’ve learned.

By the end of KS1, children at St Nicholas are curious, confident and ready to explore. They understand how science connects to their lives and the wider world, and they’re proud to share what they know and how they found it out.
